Polished Concrete
Both epoxy flooring and polished concrete have become popular flooring options among everyone, from homeowners to business owners to industrial facilities. These two flooring systems can do it all!
But if both of these flooring systems can provide so many benefits, what’s the difference?
That’s what we’re here to answer! In the article below, we’ll be comparing these two useful floors and what sets them apart. Continue reading to learn more!
Durability
The durability of both epoxy flooring and polished concrete is remarkably similar. They can each handle hard impacts, rough abrasions, and high volumes of foot and vehicle traffic. Epoxy flooring is inherently damage-resistant, while polished concrete is made more durable during the polishing process as it becomes denser and more rigid.
This durability can save home and business owners thousands of dollars on expensive, frequent repairs. Epoxy flooring and polished concrete are practically evenly matched when it comes to durability.
Longevity
Epoxy flooring and polished concrete both have long lifespans. When installed correctly and properly maintained, epoxy flooring can last for 25 years or more before needing significant repairs or full replacement.
The polishing process can also add 25 years or more to your concrete’s lifespan! As the concrete is polished and sealed with an impregnating sealer, the concrete itself becomes denser and non-porous, which repels many damaging factors that would typically damage your concrete.
So, when it comes to longevity, the two floors are also evenly matched.
Customization
Customization is one of the most significant differences between polished concrete and epoxy flooring. Both floors can be customized but in different ways.
Epoxy flooring has an endless amount of colors, patterns, and textures that can be combined to create virtually any look for your space. There are also several styles of epoxy flooring that you can choose, including standard epoxy, metallic epoxy, and decorative flake epoxy. Each of these epoxy styles can be installed in practically any color you can think of and can be patterned any way you wish.
Polished concrete is limited in its customization to concrete stains, stenciling patterns, and scoring patterns. There are two types of concrete stains that you can choose from acid-based and water-based stains. Acid-based stains react with the concrete chemically to impart permanent color and are available in earth tones only. Water-based stains permeate the concrete and soak into it to impart permanent color. Water concrete stains are available in more vibrant colors that acid-based. As for patterns, many stencils can be used to create a wide variety of designs, and scoring patterns can allow you to have custom-made patterns for your polished concrete floor.
Price
Even the price of these two floors is similar. Both epoxy flooring and polished concrete can cost between $3 and $12 per square foot to install. These prices are dependant on several factors, such as the size of your floor, colors, and pattern complexity.
The main difference regarding price is what you get for the price. A basic epoxy floor with no pattern will be closer to the $3 per square foot end of the cost. A basic epoxy floor can be installed in various colors that will still allow it to be near the low-end of the price. A basic polished concrete floor with no pattern will be closer to the $3 per square foot price, but it will be the standard grey concrete with a high-gloss finish. Adding colors to your polished concrete will cause the price to go up.
Wrapping Up
Epoxy flooring and polished concrete share many similarities. However, they differ in a couple of ways that include their customization options and what you get for the price. Though the prices are quite similar, you’ll be limited to what you can do with polished concrete for the same price as epoxy. Either choice you make, you’ll have a dependable, long-lasting floor that you can enjoy for years to come!
